SUMMARY

OVERVIEW

Questioning skills are central to the development of an inquiry mindset. In this session, participants examine the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) as a strategy to help students produce, improve, and categorize questions.

PARTICIPANTS WILL

  • Practice using the Question Formulation Technique

  • Troubleshoot challenges for students when using the QFT

  • Set intentions and goals for use of the QF

MATERIALS & PREP

VIDEO PROMPT

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

OPENING

  1. Project the following prompt from the  Student-Generated Questions slide presentation. Do not yet discuss the prompt.

    • What challenges have you encountered in facilitating the steps of the QFT? What progress or successes have you observed?

  2. Show the “QFT in 90 Seconds" video to review the steps of the QFT.

  3. Revisit the prompt in a Think Pair Share.

    • What challenges have you encountered in facilitating the steps of the QFT? What progress or successes have you observed?

FACILITATOR NOTE

  • This session assumes that teachers have already facilitated sessions of the QFT.

  • The QFT in 90 Seconds reviews the steps prior to the discussion of the prompt.

FACILITATOR NOTE

  • The purpose of this QFocus is to get participants thinking about the importance of fidelity to the QFT protocol.

  • Model this fidelity:

    • Once you project the QFocus, try not to add any additional explanations.

    • Be sure to read and follow the steps in full.

ACTIVE INQUIRY

  1. Divide the group into pairs and facilitate a QFT with participants using the following Question Focus:

    •  “A Boston University study found that students showed the greatest gains in skill development when teachers consistently implemented the QFT as written, without additions or subtractions."

  2. All steps of the QFT are included in the Student-Generated Questions slide presentation

    • Additionally, an online timer for each step is included in the corresponding slide.

CLOSING

  1. Facilitate a closing discussion of the QFT experience in which:

    • Each pair shares out their top 3 questions.

    • Participants discuss the importance of fidelity to a protocol.

    • Each participant sets an intention or goal for their next QFT session with students.

FACILITATOR NOTE

  • The intentions or goals that participants set can be shared out with the group as well

  • Consider revisiting the topic at a later date to follow up on the goals.
